Common slant bed cnc lathe terms you need to know

2020-04-30 15:50:42

Slant bed cnc lathe is one of the most widely used processing tools in manufacturing. Usually used for cutting and turning operations, but also for grinding, drilling and finishing. The design of the lathe is mainly to rotate the workpiece against the fixed cutting tool.

Chips
Lathe chips are simply referred to as chips. No matter what kind of operation is used, the lathe will always produce chips, mainly composed of the material removed from the workpiece. Whether the workpiece is made of wood or metal, the lathe removes some material.

Headstock
The spindle box is located at the left or right end of the lathe and is responsible for rotating the workpiece. The bearings included allow the workpiece to rotate relative to the fixed cutting tool.

Jeweler's Lathe

The jeweler's lathe is a special type of lathe designed specifically for small objects and workpieces. Jewelers' lathes are not only used for jewelry, they can be used to process most small objects and workpieces. Jeweler's lathes have many of the same components as traditional lathes, but they are scaled down and processed more precisely, thereby providing convenient and effective processing tools for small objects and workpieces.

Spindle
In addition to the spindle box, the lathe also contains the spindle. The main shaft is hollow with external threads and can rotate freely. Some spindles are manually driven by foot pedals, while others are automatically driven by motors.

Lathe
Lathes are horizontal beams on which work pieces and most lathe parts are placed. Slant bed CNC lathe usually have vertical beams to minimize the accumulation of chips. With a vertical bed, chips can fall freely to the floor instead of accumulating in and around the workpiece.

Panel
The panel is not used on all lathes, the purpose of the panel is to fix the workpiece in place. Before using the lathe, the manufacturing company will fix the workpiece to the panel. This is usually done by screwing screws or bolts into the workpiece and the panel. Once secured, the lathe is engaged to rotate the workpiece relative to the stationary cutting tool.
